Submissions Call: Haiku on History

w&e8

Whispers and Echoes will be on its annual break between 1st – 14th September, but submissions are open for our latest themed call: Haiku on History.

Submission Guidelines:

  • The theme is History.  You can run with this theme in any way you like. Want to write haiku about ancient Rome, medieval ruins or ghosts? Go ahead. Want to write haiku about iron age roundhouses or castles or the pyramids? We would love to read them. Want to write haiku about your own history, for example, on the subject of growing up? Sounds good to us. As long as it is set in the past and adheres to our general guidelines, you can be as creative as your inspiration guides you.
  • The format is: Haiku using the 5-7-5 syllable structure.
    • Please, no other forms and styles of poetry, and no flash fiction for this call.
  • Our usual submission guidelines apply, except that we are only accepting haiku length poetry for this particular theme (as stated above).  The full guidelines can be found here.  Please read them before submitting.
  • Please state the following in the subject line: Haiku on History – Your Name
  • Submissions open: 31/08/2022
  • Submissions close: 15/09/2022
  • Accepted submissions will be posted on the site from the end of September and into October
  • Responses will go out when we return after our annual break
  • You may send up to 3 haiku for consideration. Each accepted submission will be posted separately.  Acceptance of one piece doesn’t mean all pieces will be accepted.
  • Please send your submissions to: deardreamingspirit@gmail.com

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Whispers and Echoes Poetry and Flash Fiction Index | July 2022

w&e6

In July, we had the amazing opportunity to have Bartholomew Barker as our first Guest Editor. For two weeks we shared his chosen submissions for his series, Sorta-Sonnets (which you can find here).

We were also able to share some amazing poetry by both old and new contributors to Whispers and Echoes.  Thank you to everyone who submitted to the journal, and my continued gratitude to those who read it.

General Submissions to Whispers and Echoes are currently closed as we have scheduled submissions all the way through to the end of August. Once these have been shared, Whispers and Echoes will be going on its annual short break, but expect submissions to open again prior to that.

We have two more themed submissions calls planned for 2022, and I can reveal they are to be: a continuation of our Haiku series, Haiku on History, and then Extended Editions for longer poems and pieces of flash.  If you would like to get an idea of the submissions requirements for these calls, you can check out last year’s posts (Haiku on Healing, Extended Editions 2021) but please note, these guidelines may change between now and when we announce the call proper. If there’s time and space enough in our posting schedule, we may also announce a photo prompt call.

General submissions closing soon…

Whispers and Echoes will be closing to general submissions from 22nd July 2022, so this is the last chance for you to submit your poetry (in 10 lines or less) or flash fiction (in 100 words or under) this summer. But don’t worry, we will be opening up again in September, after our annual break.

Everything you need to know about submitting to Whispers and Echoes can be found on our SUBMIT page.
