Mud | Peter Matthews

There’s good mud and bad mud and mud in between

The thing is with mud you don’t know where it’s been

It’s come from the hills or has stayed on the plain

It sometimes just washes on past with the rain

Whatever the type you encounter today

Don’t worry when covered, it will wash away!

If mud is a thing that you really don’t like

I wouldn’t suggest that you go for a hike

For surely when ambling as every man should

You’re sure to encounter a great deal of mud

Peter Matthews, a country boy at heart, lives with his wife in the suburbs of Nottingham, England.  His greatest achievement is that he has aged fairly gracefully but has avoided growing up.  Peter has written poetry from the age of sixteen and blogs regularly at

  1. According to my husband and my son, there is no such thing as ‘bad’ mud. I mostly agree. ‘The thing is with mud you don’t know where it’s been’ – that’s the bit that worries me… I guess, life’s too short to get overly concerned. The fear of getting dirty should never get into the way of fun.

    1. Oooh, Britta, I’m not sure at all about ‘No bad mud’. The last lot resisted being cleaned off hiking boots, and was pretty exhausting to schlepp through. But I admire their positivity!

      1. Hiking boots harbour all sorts of sins. I tried cleaning my pair today. With an old toothbrush, to get into all the nooks and crannies. You’d think I traversed the universe! Stuff came out that I really, really didn’t want to investigate any further…
