Travelers in a Wood | McKenzie Richardson

“Let’s rest here for the night,” Catheus states, dropping his pack.

I nod, mirroring his movements. We eat our provisions then settle among our separate blankets.

Relaxation washes over me for a moment before I hear a dry rustle to my left. Something brushes against my leg. An insect, most likely. I shake it off, kicking out a foot.

Stillness returns temporarily before the sudden sensation of someone gripping my ankle startles me, the hand cold as ice in the summer warmth.

“Catheus, quit it.”

On my other side, I see the shadow of Catheus sit up.

“Quit what?”
