Maki penciled in the last few details of the portrait. She’d spent her entire life doodling, but only after her mother’s death had her obsession with realistic drawing begun.
The eyes on the paper started out at her, a perfect recreation of the lively ones from the photograph she’d used for reference.
An otherworldly light shined through those pencil-line eyes. The light intensified until they emerged from the page, followed by a sharp nose, smiling lips, and soon an entire body.
The drawing-come-to-life swept Maki up in its arms. Returning the hug, tears rolled down Maki’s face.
“Mom,” she sobbed.
